Summit Stainless Steel, formerly KG Specialty Steel, was established in 1965 as a division of Kanematsu Gosho USA in order to introduce Aichi Steel and Hitachi Steel quality stainless steel products to American and Canadian steel service centers. The initial product range included stainless steel angles, HRAP flat bars and round bars with a finish superior to production that was available in the U.S. marketplace at that time. Regional warehouses were then opened to improve lead times to service centers. By 1972, the company had four stocking warehouses: New Jersey, Illinois, California and Ontario, Canada. Shortly thereafter, our operation expanded to Texas and North Carolina with Georgia added in the early eighties. In 1991, KG Specialty Steel became a fully incorporated subsidiary of Kanematsu USA Inc. and the company was ultimately purchased by Sumitomo Corporation in 2005. KG Specialty Steel was now Summit Stainless Steel.
In April of 2006, Distributor Metals Corporation (DMC) merged with Summit Stainless Steel, further enhancing our position as a leader in metal distribution.
We were the first master distributor in the Unites States whose policy was to sell exclusively to metal service centers and supply houses as a basic business policy, and we are the only master distributor left to have continued this policy. It is a basic tenet of our mission statement.
Since our inception, we have grown by continually increasing the depth of our product line, and by our commitment to customer service. In order to keep pace with an ever-changing market, we have expanded our supply sources to other areas of the world, including domestic manufacturers. Summit Stainless Steel sells only to steel service centers and purchases only from suppliers who are willing to meet our strict quality requirements. All suppliers are visited by qualified Summit Stainless Steel staff to ensure that these requirements are followed.
With new warehouse locations in Oregon and Florida, Summit Stainless Steel is looking ahead to what the stainless steel marketplace will be in coming years, as we plan new products and services for metal service centers and supply houses.
